Something living beneath the tree attached itself to her spine. The manga never gives this organism a simple scientific name, although it is sometimes described as the source of all living matter. Once it bonded with Ymir, she transformed into an enormous Titan. This was the first appearance of Titan power in human history, and every transformation seen centuries later ultimately traces back to that encounter.
Ymir’s Titan form was immensely powerful, but obtaining that strength did not make her free. King Fritz continued to use her as a weapon for the Eldian tribe. She defeated enemies, cultivated land and helped Eldia expand its territory. Modern representations, including an Attack on Titan figure, often focus on the spectacular appearance of Titan shifters, but their origin is deliberately tragic. Titan power began as a tool of domination, not as a heroic gift.
How did Ymir’s power become the Nine Titans?
Ymir Fritz remained connected to King Fritz until her death thirteen years after obtaining her powers. She died while protecting him from an assassination attempt. Rather than allowing her power to disappear, the king ordered their three daughters, Maria, Rose and Sina, to consume Ymir’s remains. That horrifying act allowed Ymir’s Titan power to continue through her descendants.
Over generations, the original power eventually separated into the Nine Titans. Each inherited a distinctive ability and could be passed from one Eldian to another. Unlike mindless Pure Titans, the holders of these powers retained human intelligence and could shift between human and Titan forms.
The nine powers descended from Ymir

Why Titan shifters only live for thirteen years
Every inheritor of one of the Nine Titans is affected by the Curse of Ymir. After receiving a Titan power, that person can live for no more than thirteen additional years. The number comes directly from Ymir herself, who died thirteen years after becoming the first Titan.
No successor is supposed to exceed the lifespan of the original Founder while carrying her power. This rule explains why Titan inheritance is treated with such urgency by Marley and Eldia. Warriors are selected young because their governments know exactly how long they can use them. Titan power therefore comes with a built-in expiration date, turning every inheritance into both an advantage and a death sentence.
Why can Eldians transform into Titans?
Not every human in the world of Attack on Titan can become a Titan. Transformation is limited to the Subjects of Ymir, people biologically connected to Ymir Fritz and her descendants. This shared ancestry forms an invisible network between them, regardless of where they live.
The series calls this network the Paths. It exists outside normal physical space and links every Subject of Ymir to the Founding Titan. Memories, Titan bodies and inherited powers can all travel through these Paths. At their intersection is the mysterious realm where Ymir continues to exist long after her physical death.
This is why Titan transformations can appear almost instantaneous in the real world. The gigantic body is not simply produced through ordinary biological growth. The Paths allow Titan flesh and structure to manifest through a mechanism that operates beyond conventional time. Attack on Titan deliberately leaves part of this process supernatural rather than reducing it to straightforward science.
Pure Titans have a different origin from Titan shifters
The enormous creatures that terrorize humanity during the opening of the story are mostly Pure Titans. They were once ordinary Subjects of Ymir. Unlike the Nine Titan holders, however, they cannot voluntarily return to human form and normally lose conscious control of their actions.
A Subject of Ymir can be transformed by exposure to Titan spinal fluid. Marley exploits this method extensively. Eldian prisoners are injected with the fluid and turned into Titans, sometimes as punishment and sometimes as military weapons. Many of the Titans wandering Paradis Island were created this way rather than being naturally born monsters.
The abnormal behavior of Pure Titans also explains one of the earliest mysteries of the series: why Titans eat humans. They do not need human flesh for nutrition. A Pure Titan can regain human form if it consumes a holder of one of the Nine Titans and inherits that person’s power. Their instinctive attacks on humans can therefore be understood as an unconscious drive toward the tiny possibility of becoming human again.
The Eldian Empire transformed Titan power into a weapon
Once Ymir’s abilities had been divided among her descendants, Titan power shaped geopolitics for centuries. The Eldian Empire used the Nine Titans to conquer territories and defeat rival nations. Marley, one of the peoples subjected to Eldian rule, later built much of its national identity around the memory of that oppression.
The balance changed during the Great Titan War. Conflict erupted among Eldian families controlling the Nine Titans. Marley eventually gained possession of seven of the nine powers, while King Karl Fritz withdrew to Paradis Island with many Eldians and retained control of the Founding Titan.
Karl Fritz created the three enormous walls, Maria, Rose and Sina, using countless Colossal-sized Titans. He then altered the memories of many people inside the walls, making them believe humanity outside had been destroyed. The opening premise of Attack on Titan is therefore built on a manufactured history. The people of Paradis do not initially know that their supposed monsters are connected to their own ancestry.
Why Marley continued creating Titans?
Marley condemned the Eldian Empire’s historical use of Titans but eventually relied on exactly the same power. After acquiring most of the Nine Titans, Marley established the Warrior program, recruiting Eldian children and turning selected candidates into Titan shifters.
Reiner Braun became the Armored Titan, Bertholdt Hoover inherited the Colossal Titan, Annie Leonhart received the Female Titan and Zeke Yeager controlled the Beast Titan. They were treated as military assets capable of destroying armies with a single transformation. Their missions show how Titan power survived because nations repeatedly found strategic reasons to preserve it.
Marley also turned unwanted Eldians into Pure Titans and sent them to Paradis. This reveals an important irony at the center of the story. The Titans feared by the inhabitants behind the walls are largely Eldian victims transformed by Marley. The supposed enemy of humanity is, in many cases, another human being stripped of identity.
The mysterious organism behind Ymir’s transformation
Ymir may be the first Titan, but one mystery goes deeper: what actually gave Ymir her power? The strange organism that fused with her is depicted as a long, spine-like creature. Later events reveal that it can exist independently and desperately attempts to reconnect with Eren when they are separated.
Zeke Yeager discusses the idea that life seeks survival and multiplication, suggesting that the organism may represent an ancient form of life capable of extraordinary adaptation. Yet the manga avoids providing a conventional scientific explanation. Its exact species, age and original purpose remain unknown.
This ambiguity is intentional. Hajime Isayama explains the historical chain of Titan inheritance in great detail while leaving its deepest biological origin partially unresolved. The organism functions almost like the root beneath the enormous tree of Titan history. Ymir’s contact with it created the power, but human choices determined what that power became.
Eren and the end of two thousand years of Titan history
Eren Yeager eventually inherits both the Attack Titan and the Founding Titan, placing him at the center of the entire chain that began with Ymir. His connection with Zeke gives him access to the Paths and ultimately brings him face to face with Ymir herself.
The crucial revelation is that Ymir has continued serving the royal bloodline within the Paths for roughly two thousand years. She creates Titan bodies and obeys commands because she remains psychologically bound to King Fritz and the world he created. Her physical death did not truly release her.
Eren persuades Ymir to make a choice rather than simply obeying royal authority. This leads to the Rumbling and eventually to Eren’s death at Mikasa’s hands. Mikasa’s decision becomes essential because Ymir witnesses someone capable of loving another person while still choosing to break a destructive bond.
With Ymir finally released from that attachment, the Power of the Titans disappears. Titan shifters lose their abilities, transformed Eldians return to human form and the cycle that began beneath the mysterious tree comes to an end. The origin of the Titans is therefore inseparable from their disappearance. Ymir created the connection two thousand years earlier, but generations of kings, soldiers and inheritors kept it alive.
The Titans were always part of a human tragedy
Attack on Titan gradually overturns almost everything viewers initially believe about its monsters. Titans are not a separate race invading humanity. Most are humans transformed into Titans, descendants of the same woman whose power reshaped civilization.
That revelation changes the meaning of the entire early story. Eren’s hatred of Titans begins with the belief that they are mindless enemies responsible for humanity’s suffering. He later discovers that the conflict is rooted in Eldian history, Marleyan oppression, inherited memories and political choices stretching back centuries.
The complete chain starts with Ymir Fritz entering a tree and bonding with an unknown organism. Her power passes to her daughters, fragments into the Nine Titans, spreads through the Subjects of Ymir and becomes a weapon used by rival empires. Centuries later, Eren inherits that history and pushes it toward its final breaking point.
That is what makes the origin of the Titans in Attack on Titan so important. The mystery is not merely about how giant humanoids came into existence. It explains the walls, the Eldian and Marleyan conflict, the Nine Titans, the Paths, Eren’s powers and the central tragedy of the series. The monsters outside the walls were never the true beginning of the story. Their origin was a human being who gained unimaginable power and remained trapped by it for two thousand years.
